About
Edit Decision Lists (EDL's) and Editing Preparation:
In order to
extract specific segments of footage from a tape, it is necessary
to create an edit decision list. If you are creating an edit
decision list (EDL) to help us better understand which segments
of your tape you would like to have edited or duplicated,
please include:
Start
time of the segment
End time of
the segment
Audio/video
description of the start time & end time points
In order for
our start & end times to be accurate, please use a VCR
with a real-time counter. That is a counter that shows 5 digits
displaying the hour, minutes & seconds (H:MM:SS). Before
you begin, please remember to rewind the tape to the beginning
and make sure the counter is set to
zero (0:00:00).
When preparing more than one tape, please be sure to label
and number all your tapes in the order you intend to use them.
If you are taking multiple clips off the same tape, do not
remove the tape from the VCR until you have documented all
the edit points on the EDL. Every time the tape is ejected,
the counter resets itself. Your edit points will be incorrect
if you remove the tape.
Since every VCR varies up to a few seconds in playback, our
editors require an audio and video cue for each edit point.
